South Africa Has a New Skydiving Record
A team of 26 skydivers has set a new South African formation skydiving record above Skydive The Ranch in Delmas, breaking the previous national mark of 24 people. The achievement has been officially ratified by the Parachute Association of South Africa.
To complete the record, all 26 skydivers had to form one formation during freefall, release every grip, move into new positions and successfully build a second formation before deploying their parachutes. The jump required precise timing and coordination between every member of the group.
Three aircraft were used to position the team correctly before the jump, while videographer Roberto Pucci captured the attempt so it could be officially verified. The group included experienced skydivers from different drop zones around South Africa, making the achievement a national team effort.

Somerset West endurance athlete Howard Warrington is continuing to use his sporting milestones to raise funds for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. Approaching his 62nd birthday, Warrington is preparing for his 29th Cape Town Cycle Tour, his 10th full Ironman, and is aiming to complete both his 250th Robben Island crossing and 250th official half-marathon.
Warrington already holds a Guinness World Record linked to his Robben Island swims and has previously raised significant amounts for animal welfare. His 2022 Swim4Survival campaign raised R131,710, while a False Bay attempt in January 2026 raised nearly R65,000 for animal sterilisation outreach despite being cut short by difficult conditions.
The fundraising comes as demand for SPCA services continues to rise. During 2025/26, 27,181 stray, surrendered and seized animals entered SPCA care, a 12.3% increase from the previous year, while family pet surrenders rose by 43.7%. Warrington’s current efforts support sterilisations, veterinary care, transport, shelter operations and animal rehoming across the Western Cape.

Strand Beach Gets Major Safety Upgrade
New demarcation boards have been installed along Strand Beach to create clearer swimming and surfing zones ahead of the busy summer season. The project is the result of a nearly 10-year community campaign aimed at reducing accidents and conflict between swimmers, surfers and other water users.
The campaign was led by local residents Dorette Bassil and Jennifer Chatburn, who raised concerns after several close calls involving surfboards and swimmers. The new boards were designed with input from the City of Cape Town, Strand Surf Lifesaving Club, local sailing clubs and Son Surf, and clearly show which areas are intended for swimming and surfing.
The signage also identifies areas affected by strong sea currents, helping swimmers avoid higher-risk sections of the beach. Lifeguards now have clearer authority to move surfers out of designated swimming zones, with the changes expected to improve safety as visitor numbers increase over summer.
Helderberg and Strand Claim Big Cricket Wins
Helderberg Cricket Club secured a tense 19-run victory over Somerset West Cricket Club at Radloff Park on Saturday, 24 October. Helderberg posted 163/7, led by Junaid Sylvester’s 72, before Ebrahiem Latief produced a standout bowling performance of 5/21 to help dismiss Somerset West for 144.
Strand Cricket Club also enjoyed a strong weekend, beating Mamre after successfully chasing 206. Ricardo Naidoo took five wickets, Darrel Filander claimed three, and Lesley Taylor finished unbeaten on 60 as Strand reached the target in the 47th over.
It was a tougher weekend for Hottentots Holland Cricket Club, which lost twice — first by six wickets to Emeris after being bowled out for 144, and then by five wickets to UCT despite improving to 196 in its second match. This Saturday, Strand face Nyanga, Somerset West travel to Hanover Park, Helderberg host Atlantis and Hottentots Holland take on Avendale.
