Deadly Mushroom Warning Issued

source: sabcnews.com

With winter rains creating ideal growing conditions, health officials are warning residents not to pick or eat wild mushrooms.

The Western Cape Department of Health says there's been a worrying increase in Death Cap mushroom poisoning, with several confirmed cases already reported.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Death Cap mushrooms are highly poisonous

  • Just one mushroom can be fatal if eaten

  • Cooking does not make them safe

  • Only eat mushrooms bought from trusted shops or supermarkets

Health officials are urging anyone who thinks they may have eaten a wild mushroom to seek medical help immediately, even if they don't feel sick yet. Early treatment can be lifesaving.

Local trivia🧠

The first mountain barrier of the Groot Trek was right here

Long before the N2 and Sir Lowry's Pass existed, anyone travelling east from Cape Town had to cross the rugged Hottentots Holland Mountains using a steep Khoi trail known as Gantouw (also called Eland's Pass).

When the Great Trek began in 1835, many Voortrekker families heading into South Africa's interior first had to overcome this mountain range. For those leaving the Cape Colony, it marked the first major natural obstacle on their journey eastward.

The original route was incredibly dangerous. Ox wagons had to be lowered down rocky slopes using ropes, and by 1821, more than 4,500 wagons crossed the pass each year—yet over 20% were damaged during the crossing. The grooves carved into the rock by wagon wheels can still be seen today on parts of the old Gantouw trail, preserving the marks left by travellers nearly 200 years ago.

In 1830, a safer route—today's Sir Lowry's Pass—was opened, making travel between Cape Town and the Overberg far easier. It remains one of South Africa's most important mountain passes and is still the main gateway east from Cape Town.
