Strand Golf Club Hit by Major Fire
A fire at Strand Golf Club destroyed approximately 68 golf carts on Wednesday, 2 September. The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service received the emergency call at around 15:30.
Fire crews from Somerset West, Strand and Sir Lowry’s Pass, along with an Incident Management Team, were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze by 17:40, just over two hours after the initial call. The golf carts were housed together in a vibacrete structure on the property.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is under way. Strand Golf Club declined to comment further while the investigation continues.

61-Year-Old Hiker Rescued in Helderberg
A 61-year-old hiker was successfully rescued from the Helderberg Nature Reserve on Sunday, 6 September, after injuring her ankle while descending the West Peak trail with her family. An awkward step left her unable to continue walking.
The woman immediately contacted Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), while her family kept her warm with additional clothing as they waited for assistance. WSAR volunteers, reserve rangers and Western Cape emergency medical personnel responded. After she was assessed and treated, rescuers placed her on a stretcher and carried her down the mountain to an ambulance, which transported her to hospital.
The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of being prepared when hiking in the Helderberg. WSAR recommends hiking with others, carrying a fully charged cellphone and keeping emergency contact details available. The WSAR emergency number is 021 937 0300.
Somerset West’s Pollen Levels Rise
Residents affected by seasonal allergies may want to keep the tissues nearby, with pollen levels currently rated as moderate in Somerset West. Weather Underground is reporting pollen from trees, grass and weeds, with moderate conditions expected to continue over the next few days.
Air quality is a bigger concern at present, with the local Air Quality Index (AQI) sitting at 119, which falls into the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category. Ozone (O₃) is currently listed as the dominant pollutant.
Children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activity while air quality remains at these levels. Those particularly sensitive to pollen may also experience increased allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes and congestion.
Cape Town Pet Owners Need to Know This
The City of Cape Town has published a draft Animal Keeping By-law proposing tighter rules for pet owners across the metro, including Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay. One of the biggest proposed changes would require dogs to be on a leash in all public streets and public places, unless the City has specifically designated the area for free-running dogs.
The draft would also require dogs to be microchipped or wear a collar and name tag containing their owner’s contact details. Existing limits on pet numbers remain unchanged: dwelling units may generally have two dogs, houses three, large houses four and farmhouses six. Residential properties may generally keep up to four cats. Keeping more than the permitted number may require a permit, and under the proposed changes officials could request written support from at least two neighbouring properties.
Other proposals include stronger powers to deal with animals kept illegally, shorter holding periods for impounded strays, tighter rules for working animals and bans on using dogs for hunting and wild or exotic animals in circuses. Importantly, these changes are still proposals and are not yet final. Cape Town residents can comment on the draft until 29 September 2026.
