A new grocery price comparison by Nedbank has found Makro to be the cheapest among seven major South African food retailers. The comparison looked at a basket of common household groceries and found an R80 difference between the cheapest and most expensive retailers.

Makro recorded the lowest overall basket price, while Pick n Pay was the most expensive in this particular comparison. The study also included major retailers such as Shoprite, Checkers, Woolworths, SPAR and Food Lover’s Market, highlighting how the cost of the same basic groceries can vary depending on where consumers shop.

The findings come as competition in South Africa’s grocery sector continues to intensify, with retailers battling for increasingly price-conscious consumers. The comparison also shows that no single supermarket is necessarily cheapest for every individual product, meaning shoppers can potentially save more by comparing prices and taking advantage of promotions across different stores.

Women are playing a major role in the Western Cape’s organ transplant programme, working across the highly specialised process that takes a donated organ from donor to recipient. At Groote Schuur Hospital, multidisciplinary teams coordinate everything from identifying suitable donors and retrieving organs to transplantation and long-term patient care.

Among those highlighted are transplant coordinator Marlene Potgieter, who has spent more than three decades working in the field, and transplant surgeon Dr Harriet Etheredge. Their work involves not only complex medical procedures but also supporting donor families and recipients through some of the most difficult and life-changing moments they will experience.

Despite the success of transplantation, South Africa continues to face a severe shortage of organ donors, leaving many patients waiting for potentially life-saving transplants. The medical teams are encouraging more South Africans to discuss organ donation with their families, as a single donor can potentially save several lives through organ donation and help many more through tissue donation.

Local artist Sanet Visser will present a printmaking demonstration for the Western Cape Arts Society on Thursday, 10 September, at the Rotary Club Hall on Lourensford Road in Somerset West. Visitors can arrive from 18:00, with the demonstration beginning at 18:30.

Titled “Surviving Against All Odds”, the demonstration will focus on geli-plate printing and Visser’s fascination with the ginkgo tree, a species that has survived for more than 200 million years. Visser uses portable geli plates to capture the shapes and patterns of leaves she discovers while walking, combining her interest in nature with traditional printmaking techniques.

Visser studied Visual Arts at the Ruth Prowse School of Art and has previously facilitated workshops at the Rupert Museum, AVA Gallery, Deckle Edge and Lourensford Estate. Entry costs R20 for WCAS members and R30 for non-members, including tea, coffee and snacks.
