Did you know that the Lourens River was once known as Tweede rivier?

Early settlers gave it this name because the nearby Eerste Rivier near Stellenbosch was considered the "First River", making the Lourens River the "Second River." Over time, the name changed to Lourens River, named after Lourens Campher, one of the early settlers in the area.

Fun fact: The Lourens River is one of the few rivers in the Western Cape where the endangered Galaxias fish can still be found. 🐟

Francois Reaches Somerset West and Surpasses R100,000 Goal

The Somerset West Family and Night Shelter has received a major boost after a community fundraising campaign raised more than R100,000 to support its work.

The funds will help the shelter continue providing assistance to vulnerable individuals and families in the Helderberg area, including accommodation, meals, and support services.

Here’s what was achieved:

  • More than R100,000 raised for the shelter

  • Over 70 donors contributed to the campaign

  • Funds will support the shelter’s ongoing operations and future growth

  • Increased awareness for the work the shelter does in the community

We know we’ve spoken about this campaign quite a bit over the past few weeks, but now that it’s officially come to an end, it’s worth celebrating the result. Raising more than R100,000 is a fantastic achievement, and it’s a testament to what can happen when a community comes together behind a good cause.

Western Cape Dams Show Continued Signs of Recovery

After concerns earlier this year about low water levels, the Western Cape’s dams are showing encouraging signs of recovery thanks to recent winter rainfall.

Latest figures show that Cape Town’s major dams are now sitting at around 72.9% capacity, with water levels continuing to climb as the rainy season gets underway.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Dam levels continue to rise across the province

  • Cape Town’s major dams are nearly 73% full

  • Recent rainfall has significantly boosted water storage

  • Levels are well above those recorded last year

The recovery follows substantial rainfall over the past few weeks, helping replenish key water supply systems across the Western Cape.
