Weather Warning Issued Across Parts of the Western Cape
Residents across parts of the Western Cape are still recovering after days of severe weather brought heavy rain, flooding, and widespread disruption.
Tragically, one person lost their life after attempting to cross a flooded river in the Garden Route, as authorities continued to warn residents about the dangers of swollen rivers and floodwaters.
While the worst of the weather has now passed, officials say the risks are far from over.
Here's what happened:
One fatality confirmed after a flooded river crossing attempt
Heavy rainfall and flooding affected parts of the Garden Route and Central Karoo
Residents evacuated from some high-risk areas as a precaution
Road closures, power outages, and infrastructure damage reported across affected regions
Authorities warning residents to stay away from flooded roads, rivers, and low-water crossings
Several rivers remain swollen and some dams are still releasing excess water, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. Emergency services and disaster management teams remain on high alert as cleanup and recovery efforts continue.
For many communities, the storm may be over, but the impact will be felt for some time as residents work to recover from the damage.
Homeowners Put on Alert Over Growing Theft Trend
Security experts are warning that organised criminal groups are increasingly targeting homes with solar panels, lithium batteries, and gas cylinders. These items are in high demand and can be removed and resold quickly on the black market.
And this isn't just opportunistic theft anymore.
According to security specialists, syndicates are arriving with the tools and knowledge needed to dismantle systems quickly, making these valuable household assets a growing target.
Here's what criminals are targeting:
Solar panels mounted on rooftops
Battery backup systems used for load-shedding protection
Gas cylinders used for cooking and heating
Experts say homeowners should treat these installations like any other high-value asset and ensure they are included in their security plans.
Some recommended precautions include:
Installing tamper sensors on solar and gas systems
Using anti-theft bolts on solar panels
Keeping installations in well-lit, visible areas
Making sure security cameras cover these assets
With more South Africans investing in alternative energy solutions, criminals are following the trend — making home security more important than ever.
