Petrol and diesel prices are going up

South Africa’s fuel prices are going up from 1 April 2026. Petrol increases by about R3.06 per litre, while diesel rises much more—by up to R7.51 per litre, which is a record high.

Other fuels like paraffin and gas are also getting more expensive. These increases are mainly caused by higher global oil prices and a weaker rand against the US dollar.

To help reduce the impact, the government is temporarily cutting the fuel levy, which makes the increases slightly smaller than they would have been.

Restaurant of the week: SMASH’D Burger

The Burger Spot That Everyone’s Talking About 🍔

Some places don’t need a huge menu or a fancy setup. They just need to do one thing really well. SMASH'D BURGER is one of those spots.

Tucked along Beach Road in Strand, this local favourite is all about bold flavour, crispy edges, and burgers done right.

The star of the menu? Classic smash burgers—juicy beef patties pressed thin on a hot grill, creating that perfect crispy crust, stacked with melted cheese and all the right toppings. It’s messy, satisfying, and exactly what a proper burger should be.

A few things that keep people coming back:
• Perfectly smashed patties with crispy edges
• Simple, flavour-packed burgers that hit every time
• Golden fries that pair with everything
• A growing local following that swears by it

It’s no-frills, it’s indulgent, and it’s quickly becoming a go-to burger spot in Strand for a reason.

High demands drive rapid apartment sales in Somerset West

A new development in Somerset West just racked up over R618 million in apartment sales in a single day — a clear signal that demand in the Western Cape is still running hot.
The sales happened during the launch of a new luxury development called “The Charles” on March 18, 2026
A total of 124 apartments (plus a penthouse) were sold in just hours, adding up to about R618.6 million
Prices ranged from around R2.1 million to R7.3 million, with penthouses going up to R25 million
The development is located near the Lord Charles Hotel and offers lifestyle perks like security, amenities, and scenic views
Buyers included a mix of locals, investors, downsizers, and some international interest

It’s a big number on paper, but the bigger story is what it represents. Demand for secure, lifestyle-focused apartments — especially in areas like Somerset West — is clearly strong, driven by emigration, limited supply, and ongoing buyer confidence.

And while not every development will see numbers like this, it reinforces a trend: people are still willing to spend big for the right location and lifestyle.

At the end of the day, the Western Cape property market isn’t slowing down — if anything, it’s shifting into a new gear.

Somerset West golfer Megan Streicher represents SA in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur event

A Somerset West local is making waves on the international stage, as Megan Streicher tees off in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur this week — one of the most prestigious events in amateur golf.

She’s competing against a small group of the world’s top players, on a course famous for hosting some of the biggest names in the sport. Just getting an invite already puts her among the elite.

Megan has been in strong form leading up to the tournament, with several top finishes in recent competitions while playing college golf in the United States. This is also not her first appearance at the event, showing she’s consistently performing at a high level.

It’s a big moment for her, but also a proud one for Somerset West. From local fairways to one of golf’s biggest amateur stages, her journey reflects how far dedication and talent can take you.

And while only one player will walk away with the trophy, the bigger story is clear — local talent is competing confidently on the world stage, and making its mark.
