At Just 12, He Published Four Books
At just 12 years old, Declan Opperman from Somerset West has achieved an incredible milestone by publishing four children's books, turning his passion for storytelling into a published book series.
Inspired by his English teacher at De Hoop Primary School, Damian Baumgart, Declan began writing last year and completed his first book in just three days. He later created the Boo's Adventures series, carefully editing each story before all four books were officially published. Alongside entertaining young readers, the books also include valuable life lessons and positive messages.
Declan's remarkable achievement is an inspiring reminder that age is no barrier to success, and his story is sure to encourage other young people in the Helderberg to pursue their own creative dreams.

Major Upgrade for Local Petrol Station
Motorists may have noticed plenty of construction activity at the TotalEnergies service station near Somerset Mall. The popular fuel station is temporarily closed as it undergoes a major upgrade aimed at improving the overall customer experience.
According to TotalEnergies, the station on the corner of Broadway Boulevard (R44) and Gutsche Road is receiving an extensive modernisation. The company says the improvements are specifically designed to provide customers with a better and more efficient service when the station reopens. The fuel station will remain closed until all construction work has been completed.
While no reopening date has been announced, TotalEnergies has thanked the community for its patience and says it looks forward to welcoming customers back to a modernised facility in the near future.
Western Cape Makes SA History
The Western Cape Government's Forensic Toxicology Unit has become the first provincial public forensic toxicology laboratory in South Africa to receive international accreditation for its drug testing methods, marking a major milestone for forensic science in the country.
Following an assessment by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS), the laboratory was awarded ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. The accreditation covers the detection of carbon monoxide poisoning and the identification of drugs in forensic specimens, helping investigators determine the causes of fires, poisonings, suspected overdoses and sudden or unexplained deaths. Officials say the recognition confirms that the laboratory's testing methods meet internationally recognised standards, giving greater confidence to forensic pathologists, police investigators, prosecutors and the courts.
The achievement strengthens the Western Cape's forensic capabilities, improving the reliability of medico-legal investigations while helping provide answers to families and supporting the justice system with internationally accredited scientific evidence.

Did you know? Gordon's Bay takes its name from Colonel Robert Jacob Gordon, a Dutch explorer, soldier and naturalist who explored much of the Cape during the late 1700s. Gordon was renowned for mapping previously uncharted areas, documenting local wildlife and plants, and helping expand European knowledge of southern Africa.
