Over 1,000 New Homes Planned for Somerset West Community

The R576 million social housing project aims to provide affordable accommodation for more than 1,000 residents, helping address the area's growing housing demand.
Here's what to know:
• R576 million investment into affordable housing in Somerset West
• 1,036 housing units planned across the development
• 208 units are already ready for occupation
• Project expected to be fully completed by March 2027
• More than 15,000 applications have already been received, highlighting the demand for affordable housing in the area
The development is located close to the N2 and will consist of four-storey apartment blocks spread across 19 buildings. Residents will also have access to green spaces, recreational areas, play parks and braai facilities.
A commercial section is planned too, including a crèche and shopping facilities.
During construction, the project has created an average of 360 job opportunities, providing an economic boost alongside much-needed housing.
With thousands of people applying for a limited number of units, the project highlights the ongoing need for affordable housing across Somerset West and the wider Western Cape.
Search for Rika Norris Continues Into Second Week
The search for 60-year-old Rika Norris has entered its second week after she disappeared during a walk at Lourensford Farm.
Here's what to know:
• Last seen on 23 May at around 10:00
• Disappeared while walking at Lourensford Farm
• Was wearing navy ski pants and a multicoloured long-sleeve top
• Extensive searches have so far found no trace of her
• Police continue to follow up on all leads
