Somerset West’s New Indoor Play Park Is Here
A new Freedom Adventure Park has opened at Somerset Mall, offering indoor activities for children aged 0 to 13. The venue includes dedicated toddler areas, soft play, indoor soccer, trampolines and a Ninja Run obstacle course.
Other activities include Aero Strike, a Multiball sports wall, nine-hole Putt Putt and UV Cosmic Glow sessions. Ticket prices range from R100 for a one-hour toddler pass to R350 for an all-day full park pass, while Putt Putt costs R150 per round. Non-slip socks are required and can be purchased at the park for R50.
The park is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 20:00 and Sunday from 09:00 to 18:00. Its indoor setting gives Helderberg families another local option for children’s activities, particularly when outdoor plans are affected by poor weather.

Woolworths Just Added 9 New Foods
Woolworths Food has launched nine new products across South Africa, ranging from breakfast options to meat, juice and desserts. The new items include mango and coconut overnight oats, smoky BBQ beef ribs, grapefruit juice, a Biscoff dessert, shakshuka and Turkish egg pots, smash burgers, as well as cocoa-and-strawberry and apple-and-cinnamon overnight oats.
The launch forms part of Woolworths’ broader push to grow its food division, which has become the company’s biggest business segment. In the 2026 financial year, Food accounted for 66.5% of total group turnover and concession sales, with turnover rising 5.7% to R55.37 billion.
Woolworths is also expanding its newer Food Emporium store format, which offers a larger range of groceries, prepared meals and specialist counters. The retailer says product innovation, online shopping and expanded store formats will continue to play a major role in growing its food business.

Paardevlei Wins Reserve of the Year
Paardevlei Nature Reserve in Somerset West has been named the City of Cape Town’s “Reserve of the Year”, recognising the progress made in establishing and improving the relatively new reserve. The award was presented at the City’s annual Biodiversity Management Branch awards ceremony.
Since reserve supervisor David Morris joined the site in January 2026, work has included fencing, clearing invasive vegetation, collecting baseline ecological data and improving community involvement. Support has also come from the Friends of Paardevlei, Helderberg Nature Reserve staff and other City conservation teams.
The reserve is regarded as an important local conservation area, with its main vlei supporting 19 bird species of conservation concern. Wildlife including caracal, Cape fox and large grey mongoose has also been recorded, while restoration work is helping protect remnants of threatened lowland vegetation.
Former Cop Killed Outside Somerset West Club
A former police officer, 41-year-old Tesvile Ryon Isaacs from Croydon, was fatally stabbed outside a club in Church Street, Somerset West, in the early hours of Saturday, 3 October. Police say the incident followed an argument between Isaacs and another man at around 02:00. Isaacs was taken for medical treatment but died on the way.
A 20-year-old man from Macassar has since been arrested and appeared in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court on a murder charge on 5 October. He remains in custody and is expected back in court on 27 October for a formal bail application.
Isaacs previously served as a sergeant at Macassar Police Station from 2013 to 2020, after earlier serving at Claremont Police Station. Former colleagues and family remembered him as a dedicated officer and warm-hearted person who enjoyed bringing people together. He is survived by five children, his parents, sister and two brothers.
