A newborn baby boy was found alive inside a toilet bin at a Somerset West shopping centre on Monday afternoon, 21 September. A passer by heard faint sounds coming from the bathroom and alerted security, who discovered the baby shortly after 14:00. Police have since arrested a 25-year-old woman on a charge of concealment of birth.

The very premature baby, whose umbilical cord was still attached, was initially cared for by pharmacy nurses before emergency services arrived. Secure Rite Security, GB Med Rescue and the Helderberg Baby Saver responded, and the infant was transported to Helderberg Hospital, where authorities confirmed he is currently in a stable condition.

The case has been referred to the National Child Protection Register for further investigation and intervention. The incident has also highlighted the Helderberg Baby Saver in Schapenberg Road, which provides a safe, anonymous and 24-hour option for relinquishing an unwanted baby. The facility has helped save just under 20 babies since opening in 2014.

The 2026 International Inflatable Super Series is heading to the Helderberg coastline from 25 September to 3 October, bringing more than 40 racing teams from South Africa, Namibia and the United States to Strand and Gordon’s Bay. The Powerboat Racing SA event will feature three disciplines: Surf, Circuit and Longhaul racing.

Racing begins at Strand Beach on Saturday, 26 September and Sunday, 27 September, with the Surf Circuit starting at 09:00 each day. On Tuesday, 29 September, competitors will tackle a demanding 100km Longhaul race from Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club, with no fuel or beach stops permitted. Circuit racing then takes place at the yacht club on 1 and 2 October.

Local competitors will also be represented, including Dylan Bamberger and Carien Engelbrecht in the Stock Class and Marc Gleed and Henco Pienaar in the Modified Class. Spectators can watch from Strand Beach, Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club and designated viewpoints along Clarence Drive, depending on the race.

The City of Cape Town is offering free entry to several of its nature reserves from Thursday, 24 September to Sunday, 27 September, giving residents an affordable way to enjoy the Heritage Day long weekend. Locally, this includes the popular Helderberg Nature Reserve in Somerset West.

The free-entry initiative also covers Blaauwberg, Table Bay and Tygerberg nature reserves. Visitors can spend the weekend hiking, walking, birdwatching, picnicking and exploring Cape Town’s protected natural areas. Normal fees will, however, still apply to certain permitted recreational activities such as water sports.

The Helderberg area also offers several City-managed reserves that are normally free to visit, including Harmony Flats in Strand, Paardevlei and Schapenberg in Somerset West, and Steenbras Nature Reserve near Gordon’s Bay. The City is encouraging residents to use the long weekend to explore the region’s natural heritage and biodiversity.

A major conservation operation has successfully relocated 20 black rhinos from KwaZulu-Natal to Botswana, effectively doubling Botswana’s black rhino population. The animals were moved in early September through two 36-hour road journeys to a secure, remote conservation area where they will have space to breed and establish a new population.

The rhinos were captured in KwaZulu-Natal in June and kept in a specially designed holding facility during a quarantine period before making the journey. According to WWF South Africa’s Black Rhino Range Expansion Programme, all 20 animals arrived safely and are settling into their new environment.

Botswana was estimated to have only around 25 black rhinos remaining, following years of pressure from poaching. The relocation forms part of a wider strategy to establish new breeding populations in secure areas across Africa, reducing the risk of having too many animals concentrated in a small number of locations and helping the endangered species recover.
