8,000 New Homes Coming to Cape Town
Construction has officially started on the Welmoed Estate development in Eerste River, one of the Western Cape Government's largest affordable housing projects.
The R1.2 billion development is expected to provide around 8,000 housing opportunities by 2040. Plans extend beyond housing, with the new community set to include two retail sites, five school sites, a clinic, a sports precinct and other community facilities.
The large-scale project aims to help address Cape Town's housing demand while creating a more integrated community with access to essential services, education and commercial facilities.

Bringing New Life to Fleur Park
A degraded coastal dune system at Fleur Park in Gordon’s Bay has been transformed into a more stable and environmentally sustainable landscape through a major restoration project by Vula Environmental Services, commissioned by the City of Cape Town.
The project restored around 5.5 hectares and involved reshaping approximately 50,565m³ of sand, rescuing and propagating indigenous plants, revegetating the dunes and introducing ongoing management. The work aims to protect nearby infrastructure, restore biodiversity and strengthen the coastline against erosion.
Completed over 2023–2025, the project went on to receive a Platinum Award for Environmental Landscape Work at the 2026 SALI Awards, recognising the successful transformation of the once-degraded dunes into a resilient coastal ecosystem.
Police Warn Motorists About Fine Scams
South African motorists are being warned about a rise in traffic fine scams, with criminals impersonating NaTIS, municipal traffic departments and other authorities through emails, SMS messages and phone calls.
Scammers typically claim that a motorist has an outstanding fine and demand immediate payment to avoid extra penalties or legal action. The messages may contain links to fake payment websites designed to steal banking and personal information. Police say warning signs include unfamiliar links, urgent payment demands and notices containing incorrect vehicle or personal details.
Motorists are advised to verify fines through official channels before paying, never provide banking details through suspicious links, and report suspected scams to SAPS. Anyone who believes their financial information has been compromised should also contact their bank immediately.
