Fix dripping taps and leaking toilets as soon as you notice them.
Water your garden only when necessary, preferably early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
Collect rainwater where possible and reuse greywater for your garden.

Metho Squirrels Meet the All Blacks
Learners from Somerset West Methodist Primary School proudly performed their iconic "Metho Spirit" war cry in front of the touring New Zealand All Blacks, continuing a tradition that began more than 33 years ago. The performance formed part of the team's official welcome at DHL Stadium.
Originally created in 1993, the Metho Spirit is a unique isiXhosa war cry that has become a defining part of the school's identity. The recent performance marked a full-circle moment, coming 30 years after a previous generation of learners performed for the All Blacks during their 1996 South African tour—an event that later led to the school's historic rugby tour of New Zealand.
For the current generation of learners, the occasion was about more than rugby. It celebrated the school's rich heritage, cultural pride, and the legacy being passed from one generation of Metho Squirrels to the next.
Lewes Street Sewage Crisis Continues
A Somerset West resident is calling for urgent action after battling a persistent sewage problem on Lewes Street for more than a decade, saying repeated overflows have created serious health risks for nearby residents.
The resident claims a collapsed sewer pipe has caused repeated blockages, allowing sewage to spill into the street, stormwater system, and onto private property. While the City of Cape Town says the network has sufficient capacity and attributes recurring problems to sand build-up, root ingress, vandalism, and foreign objects, the resident argues that temporary repairs have failed to solve the underlying issue.
The City says long-term upgrades are included in its infrastructure planning, but residents are continuing to call for a permanent solution to prevent future sewage spills and protect public health.
Residents Invited to Have Their Say
Somerset West Police are inviting residents to comment on two new liquor licence applications submitted for businesses in the area. Public objections or comments must be submitted by 11 August 2026.
The applications are for an eLiquor Franchise liquor store on Main Road, Somerset West, and Bossa Wingrove, a restaurant at Wingrove Square in Firgrove. Police say anyone wishing to object must provide specific reasons relating to the applications, along with their personal or business details as required under the Western Cape Liquor Act.
The public participation process gives residents an opportunity to raise concerns or support the applications before a final decision is made on the proposed liquor licences.
