Young Somerset West Musician Set to Shine at National Event
Junming Lin (10) from Somerset West and Johandre Conradie (12) from Stellenbosch have been selected to take part in the 37th Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition, which will be held at Stellenbosch University from 22 to 26 September 2026.
Here's what happened:
Junming Lin (piano) and Johandre Conradie (cello) were selected to compete in the national competition
The event is regarded as one of South Africa's top music competitions for performers aged 13 and younger
A total of 47 young musicians from South Africa and Namibia were chosen through auditions
Contestants will compete for a share of more than R100,000 in prize money at Stellenbosch University's Endler and Fismer halls
The competition has helped launch the careers of many successful South African musicians over the past three decades.

Rare Baby Quagga Born at Somerset West Wine Estate

A Somerset West wine estate is celebrating the birth of a rare Rau quagga foal, marking an important milestone in a conservation project that has been running for nearly four decades.
Here's what happened:
A rare Rau quagga foal was born at Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West
The birth is part of a conservation project that began in 1987
The original quagga was declared extinct after the last known animal died in 1883
The healthy foal has already grown around 15cm in its first month and has been accepted by the herd
The estate hopes the herd will continue breeding to support the long-term conservation programme
The birth is encouraging news for local conservation efforts and highlights the important role Somerset West plays in protecting and preserving South Africa's wildlife heritage. Visitors to Vergelegen can even spot the quagga during guided game drives on the estate.
