Is Your Home a Target?

Security experts are warning that criminals often choose homes based on how easy they appear to access, rather than the value of the property itself. Small security weaknesses can make a home far more attractive to opportunistic thieves.

Homes with poor lighting, overgrown gardens, unlocked gates, visible valuables, or weak security measures are more likely to be targeted. Experts also warn that criminals increasingly scout neighbourhoods by posing as waste pickers, delivery drivers, or other service providers to identify vulnerable properties.

Homeowners are encouraged to keep entrances well lit, trim back vegetation, lock gates and doors, avoid leaving valuables in plain sight, and remain alert to suspicious activity. Security companies say these simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a target.

Vergelegen's Camellias Are in Bloom

Visitors gathered at Vergelegen Wine Estate for its annual Camellia Walk, celebrating one of the estate's most spectacular winter attractions. Guided by the estate's horticulturist, guests explored Africa's only International Camellia Garden of Excellence, learning about its history, rare varieties, and expert gardening techniques.

Vergelegen is home to more than 1,000 camellia shrubs representing around 550 varieties, making it one of only 39 internationally recognised camellia gardens in the world and one of just two in the Southern Hemisphere. The flowers are at their peak from late July to early August, with blooms continuing through to September.

The annual event showcases one of Somerset West's most unique botanical treasures, giving visitors the chance to experience a world-class garden while learning about the rich history and conservation of these beautiful winter blooms.

Local Learners Take Action for the Ocean

Sixty Grade 6 learners from Christmas Tinto Primary School rolled up their sleeves to help protect the Helderberg Marine Protected Area by taking part in a beach clean-up and environmental education programme. The initiative aimed to teach young people how everyday actions can impact the health of the ocean.

Hosted by the City of Cape Town's Environmental Management Department, the programme combined hands-on conservation with interactive activities, giving learners the opportunity to learn about marine ecosystems while removing litter from the coastline. The event was held ahead of International Marine Protected Areas Day, encouraging the next generation to become environmental stewards.

The initiative highlights the importance of community involvement in protecting the Helderberg's coastline and inspiring young people to care for the natural environment for years to come.

Western Cape's Driest July in Decades

The south-western Western Cape has recorded its driest July in decades, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), after significantly below-average rainfall was recorded across much of the region.

Several weather stations recorded their lowest July rainfall on record, raising concerns about the remainder of the winter rainfall season. Despite the exceptionally dry month, experts say major dam levels remain healthy thanks to good rainfall earlier in the season, easing the immediate risk of water shortages. However, SAWS is continuing to monitor conditions closely, as further below-average rainfall could affect water supplies if the dry trend continues.

While the province is not facing an immediate water crisis, the unusually dry conditions serve as a reminder of how quickly weather patterns can change and the importance of using water responsibly.
